§ 02 — Why we exist

For generations, cultures around the world have recognized something that modern healthcare is only beginning to rediscover: mothers need time to heal.

The birth of a baby happens in a single day, but the birth of a mother unfolds over weeks. Her body is recovering from pregnancy and childbirth. Her hormones are rapidly shifting. She is learning to feed, soothe, and care for a newborn while adjusting to a completely new identity.

Yet in the United States, most mothers leave the hospital within just a few days and are expected to recover while managing visitors, household responsibilities, sleepless nights, and the demands of everyday life.

At The Retreat at MILK Maternity, we believe recovery deserves more.

Our 40-Day Maternal Confinement is a modern interpretation of one of the world's oldest postpartum traditions. It honors the wisdom of cultures that have protected mothers for centuries while integrating evidence-informed maternal care, therapeutic wellness, and compassionate support for today's families.

§ 03 — Why forty days

Six weeks that
reshape a life.

The first six weeks after birth are among the most significant periods of physical and emotional recovery. During this time, the uterus returns toward its pre-pregnancy size, hormones shift dramatically, breastfeeding is established, sleep deprivation begins to accumulate, and mothers adapt to caring for a newborn while healing themselves.

Across many cultures, this period has long been recognized as sacred. Families intentionally created space for mothers to recover before returning to the responsibilities of daily life.

We use forty days not because every mother needs to stay away from home for forty days, but because it represents a thoughtful framework for recovery.

Whether you spend two nights with us or several weeks, every mother begins the same journey. Your stay introduces the principles of maternal confinement, and you'll leave with a personalized plan to continue your recovery throughout the remainder of your forty-day healing period at home.

§ 04 — On the word itself

Not restriction.
Protection.

The word confinement often sounds unfamiliar in modern culture, but historically it had very little to do with restriction. It meant protection.

For generations, mothers were relieved of cooking, cleaning, entertaining guests, and daily responsibilities so they could focus on healing, nourishing their bodies, bonding with their babies, and adjusting to motherhood with the support of those around them.

Confinement was never intended to isolate women. It was intended to care for them.

At The Retreat at MILK Maternity, we embrace that philosophy by creating an environment where mothers are free from many of life's daily demands and surrounded by compassionate professionals whose sole purpose is to support their recovery.

Permission to slow down.

Permission to heal.

Permission to receive the same level of care you so naturally give to everyone else.

§ 05 — A shared inheritance

A tradition shared
around the world.

Although every culture practices postpartum recovery differently, remarkable similarities appear across continents and generations.

01China

Zuò yuè zi.

While these traditions differ in practice, they share a common belief:
when mothers are intentionally cared for, families thrive.

Our approach honors that shared wisdom while adapting it for today's mothers through a thoughtful combination of evidence-informed care, therapeutic wellness, and personalized support.

§ 06 — The MATERNAL framework

Eight pillars.
One recovery.

Every mother's recovery is unique, but every stay at The Retreat is guided by the same philosophy. Our proprietary MATERNAL Framework brings together eight interconnected pillars that influence maternal recovery during the perinatal period.

§ 07 — Every mother, met where she is

Recovery looks
different for every mother.

The beauty of the 40-Day Maternal Confinement is that it can begin wherever you are. Some mothers arrive directly from the hospital seeking uninterrupted rest before returning home. Others come several weeks after birth to reset, recover, and receive additional support during a challenging season.

Some stay only a few nights. Others remain for several weeks. Every journey is different, but every mother deserves intentional care.

012–3 Nights

The Introduction.

A restorative beginning focused on immediate recovery, nourishing meals, rest, newborn support, and a personalized plan for the weeks ahead.

024–7 Nights

Additional time to establish feeding, receive therapeutic wellness treatments, restore sleep, and build confidence before returning home.

038–14 Nights

§ 08 — Our promise

Care for the mother
as intentionally as the baby.

  • We honor both evidence and tradition.
  • We believe healing cannot be rushed.
  • We believe nourishment is medicine.
  • We believe rest is productive.
  • We believe support should be practical, compassionate, and individualized.

Most of all, we believe every mother deserves the opportunity to begin motherhood feeling seen, cared for, and deeply supported.

Whether your journey with us lasts two nights or forty days, our hope is that you leave stronger than when you arrived, equipped with the knowledge, confidence, and community to continue healing long after you return home.

§ 09 — Begin your recovery

Guided by modern evidence.

Experience a new approach to postpartum care rooted in ancient wisdom, guided by modern evidence, and designed entirely around the mother.
